but, Heinz (1989) questioned the usefulness of sublethal end points for determining actual harm to organisms. The problem with these and sublethal end points is determining their ecological significance to avoid the frequently encountered "so what" questions.
The point is that after decade of appeals from reseachers to improve our understanding of conraminant effects at higher levels of organization, there has been very little intergration of ecology and toxicology.
熱い文章が書かれている。分子や細胞，個体レベルの非致死影響の研究があいかわらず多いが，もっと生態学と毒性学が一緒になって，個体群や群集，生態系レベルでの影響評価をしなければならないという主張。Clementsもこういう動きをしていたわけですね。。とてもおもしろい。
余談ですが，学会（生態学会ではない）で，水質が底生動物に及ぼす影響を調べていた研究があって，そこで，「物理環境も重要ですが，それはどうですか？」という質問に工学系の先生が出てきて，「水質が重要なんです」という。日本もまだまだだと思います。自戒の念をこめて。
